I believe in Hindi Films and Hindi Film makers, we have a lot of creative people in the Bollywood Film Industry who want to make great films. But they can't do it unless we stop video piracy, so please help stop video piracy. Feel free to contact me to find out which DVDs have been released by the producers of the film, before you purchase them. But most of the info will be available on this site. I'm hoping that this section of my site will help you understand why we must stop video piracy. So please read the piracy section following "DVD Update" and help in creating Beautiful and Epic Hindi Films.

Parineeta PARINEETA has been released on DVD by UTV
with Subtitle in English, Arabic and Spanish, Anamorphic Widescreen, Dolby Digital 5.1 Sound.
PARINEETA stars Sanjay Dutt, Saif Ali Khan, Vidya Balan, Raima Sen, Diya Mirza, Rekha. The film is Directed By Pradeep Sarkar.
Pradeep Sarkar is a director to watch! It's rare for a first-timer to display such sensitivity and extract life-like performances, especially from a debutante [Vidya Balan]. Even otherwise, the effort of replicating Kolkata of the 1960s is remarkable. Shantanu Moitra's music is a letdown. Ideally, a film like this -- a love story specifically -- should've been embellished with a lilting, memorable score. But in this case, 'Piyu Bole' is the only track that really stands out. But, frankly, it isn't of the chartbuster variety. The execution of the Rekha song is brilliant. Cinematographer [N. Nataraja Subramanian] is first-rate. The production design [Keshto Mondal, Tanushree Sarkar, Pradeep Sarkar] compliments the cinematography beautifully. Saif Ali Khan takes colossal strides as an actor. The actor handles a complex role with dexterity and enacts his part with flourish. Sanjay Dutt is efficient in a smaller role comparatively. It's Vidya Balan who gives PARINEETA that extra sheen. Vidya takes to the role like a fish takes to water and delivers the most striking performance by a debutante this year. Dia Mirza makes her presence felt. Ditto for Raima Sen. Sabyasachi Chakraborty is superb. On the whole, PARINEETA is a well made film that has its share of highs and lows. At the box-office, the film would appeal more to the elite that frequent the multiplexes, but at the hardcore Hindi movie belt, its business will range from average to downwards. The multiplexes of metros should fetch the best returns!
RATING: ****

Viruddh VIRUDDH will be released soon on DVD by UTV
with Subtitle in English, Arabic and Spanish, Anamorphic Widescreen, Dolby Digital 5.1 Sound.
VIRUDDH stars Amitabh Bachchan, Sharmila Tagore ,Sanjay Dutt, John Abraham. The film is Directed By Mahesh Manjrekar.
This may not be Manjrekar's finest directorial effort [VAASTAV still ranks high, followed by ASTITVA], but the director knows what he's talking. He has handled the subject with utmost sensitivity, without resorting to gimmicks or bowing down to the rundown formulae. The background score [Ajay-Atul] could've been far more effective. Cinematography [Vijay Arora] suits the demands of the script. Dialogues [Sanjay Pawar] are straight out of life. Commendable. Editing [Rahul Bhatankar] should've been tighter. Amitabh Bachchan dominates the show yet again! The veteran is going through the best phase in his career, with roles offering him scope to go beyond the stereotype. VIRUDDH would've gone for a toss if entrusted in inferior hands, but Bachchan's simple yet powerful performance remains the hallmark of the enterprise. Sharmila Tagore is a pleasure to watch. The actor is natural to the core and carries the most difficult sequences with utmost ease. One hopes to watch this gifted actor in more movies! Sanjay Dutt has a brief role, but the actor makes his presence felt for sure. John Abraham is another sincere actor to look forward to. Anusha Dandekar looks the character. Sachin Khedekar is first-rate yet again. Amitabh Dayal is in terrific form. Prem Chopra, Sharat Saxena, Shivaji Satam, Tom Alter, Ninad Kamat, Atul Kale and Beena are perfect in their parts. On the whole, VIRUDDH has the merits to remain etched in your memory even after the screening has concluded. At the box-office, the film may be a slow starter, but has the merits to climb the ladder on the strength of the strong emotional quotient and topnotch performances.

MPKK MAINE PYAAR KYUN KIYA has been released on DVD by SPARK
with Subtitle in English, Arabic and Spanish, Anamorphic Widescreen, Dolby Digital 5.1 Sound.
MPKK stars Salman Khan, Katrina Kaif, Sushmita Sen, Arshad Warsi, Isha Koppikar, Rajpal Yadav, Sohail Khan. The film is Directed By David Dhawan.
David Dhawan keeps the interests of the masses in mind and that's pretty evident this time as well. MAINE PYAAR KYUN KIYA has enough rib-tickling moments that can really drive you nuts and the pacing is so fast generally, it doesn't leave room for the moviegoer to blink an eyelid. Himesh Reshammiya's music is in keeping with the mood of the film. 'Just Chill', 'Laga Prem Rog' and 'Dil Di Nazar' are peppy numbers that have been promoted extensively and also look good on screen. The choreography of 'Just Chill' and 'Laga Prem Rog' in particular is very energetic. The film bears a striking look throughout, courtesy Vikas Shivraman's cinematography. A film of this genre relies heavily on wit and humor and the repartees/witty retorts [dialogues: Sanjay Chhel] are superb. MAINE PYAAR KYUN KIYA is a Salman Khan film all the way. The good looking actor has specialized at aimed-at-gallery roles and his performance plus charisma is what makes the goings-on so pleasurable. Besides, the terrific rapport that David Dhawan and Salman share translates beautifully on the big screen. Sohail Khan is back and how! MAINE PYAAR KYUN KIYA showcases the youngest Khan's talent to the optimum, he is truly pyaara. Sushmita Sen is so perfect, so natural and yes, eye-candy for those looking for the glamour quotient. Katrina Kaif is a complete revelation. The pretty lass, who showed improvement in SARKAR two weeks ago, finally gets the right role to showcase her talent. Arshad Warsi is a major force to reckon with when it comes to comic roles and under David Dhawan's direction, the actor explodes big time. He is simply superb! Bina Kak is another actor to watch. She excels! On the whole, MAINE PYAAR KYUN KIYA is a breezy entertainer that will keep the viewers smiling, which in turn will make its distributors laugh all the way to the bank!

Dus A 2-Disc Collector's Edition DVD of DUS has been released by KRIA
with Subtitle in English, Arabic and Spanish, Anamorphic Widescreen, Dolby Digital 5.1 Sound.
DUS stars Sanjay Dutt, Abhishek Bachchan, Zayed Khan, Shilpa Shetty, Esha Deol, Diya Mirza, Raima Sen, Pankaj Kapoor, Gulshan Grover. The film is Directed By Anubhav Sinha.
Anubhav Sinha has concentrated more on giving the film a slick look than narrating a gripping story and this fact reverberates at several points in the film. There's no denying that DUS bears the stamp of an upmarket product all through, but how one wishes the director and the writers would've ensured that the film has a power-packed screenplay to offer as well. Writers Yash-Vinay have chosen an interesting idea, but the screenplay backfires completely. The writing is the most glaring defect of the enterprise and the flaws just cannot be overlooked. Dialogues [Anubhav Sinha] are quite good at places. Cinematography [Vijay Arora] is outstanding. Vishal-Shekhar's music is top grade. 'Dus Bahane' and 'Deedar De' are already chartbusters and their placement is perfect. The engagement song, 'Chham Se', is also melodious. Allan Amin's stunts are electrifying. DUS has a huge star cast, but at the end of the day it's Abhishek Bachchan and Sanjay Dutt [in that order] who stand out with spirited performances. Abhishek is likeable, while Sanju lends the right maturity to his role. Suniel Shetty is okay, while Zayed Khan passes muster. Amongst girls, Shilpa Shetty is the best of the lot. Esha Deol wears a blank look. Dia Mirza and Raima Sen get minimal scope. Pankaj Kapoor is efficient, proving yet again that he's amongst the finest actors on the scene. Gulshan Grover gets no lines to deliver, except look ferociously at the camera. On the whole, DUS has an impressive star cast, the hit tracks ['Dus Bahane' and 'Deedar De'] and vibrant action as its trump card. But, on the flip side, the film doesn't have the content to keep you hooked to the proceedings for the next two hours. At the box-office, the film will embark on a strong start, but it doesn't have the merits to sustain after the initial curiosity subsides. The terrific start will ensure a quick, part recovery for its distributors, before it slows down.

Paheli PAHELI has been released on DVD by EROS ENTERTAINMENT
with Subtitle in English, Arabic and Spanish, Anamorphic Widescreen, Dolby Digital 5.1 Sound.
PAHELI stars Amitabh Bachchan, Shahrukh Khan, Rani Mukherjee, Suneil Shetty and Juhi Chawala. The film is Directed By Amol Palekar.
Director Amol Palekar marries form [technique] and content [script] beautifully. Technically speaking, PAHELI is amongst the most refined films India has produced. The special effects, in plenty, are expertly executed and are akin to the icing on a delicious pudding. Palekar has also shot the film well. His shot execution is very contemporary, yet he never forgets that it's not MATRIX that he's attempting, but folklore and folklores ought to have the earthy feeling. More than anything else, Palekar has handled the story with amazing flourish. Sandhya Gokhale's screenplay is almost flawless. Dialogues, also penned by Sandhya, are another area where the film scores. The writer has not deviated from the script or made an effort to make the actors deliver lines that would look out of place in a folktale. The lines are in sync with the goings-on. Ravi K. Chandran's cinematography is mesmerizing. Muneesh Sappal's sets deserve special mention. The detailing that has gone into giving a particular feel to the film is worth noting and appreciating. Editing [Amitabh Shukla] could've been crisper. M.M. Kreem's music may not be of the chartbusting variety, but it has some wonderful melodies. 'Lagaa Re Jal Lagaa', 'Kangna Re' and 'Dheere Jalna' are embellished with words [Gulzar] and tunes that are soft and soothing to the nerves. The choreography [Farah Khan] is tremendous as well. PAHELI would be incomplete without SRK and Rani. The two actors are in terrific form yet again. If you ever had an iota of doubt about SRK's versatility, it would evaporate the moment you watch PAHELI. This is amongst SRK's most accomplished performances ever. Rani proves yet again why she's the rani today! The actor, who has already proved her mettle in two diametrically opposite films this year [BLACK, BUNTY AUR BABLI], delivers yet another performance that is sure to dominate the next year award ceremonies as well. Amitabh Bachchan is okay. Suniel Shetty and Juhi Chawla are alright. Amongst character actors, Anupam Kher and Rajpal Yadav stand out. Their individual scenes bring a smile on your face. Dilip Prabhavalkar is competent. Neena Kulkarni, Padma Rani, Mohan Bhandari, Aasif Sheikh and A.K. Hangal are natural. On the whole, PAHELI is one of the finest films produced in the recent times. A film like this proves yet again that we don't need to seek inspiration from outsiders, when the Indian literature is rich enough to provide us with captivating stories. A must-watch film that is highly recommended for the entire family!

Sarkar SARKAR has been released on DVD by KRIA
with Subtitle in English, Arabic and Spanish, Anamorphic Widescreen, Dolby Digital 5.1 Sound.
SARKAR stars Amitabh Bachchan, Abhishek Bachchan, Kay Kay, Kartina Kaif, Tanisha, Anupam Kher, Zakir, Ravi Kale, Raju Mavani, Ishrat Ali, Jeeva, Deepak Shirke, Anant Jog, Virendra Saxena, Supriya Pathak and Rukhsaar. The film is Directed By Ram Gopal Varma.
As always, RGV's direction deserves distinction marks. An RGV films bears its individualistic stamp and stands out in a league of its own. The background score is another area where the film works big time. The score elevates the situations considerably. Cinematography is fantastic. Dialogues as well as sound effects are of standard. Amitabh Bachchan has portrayed diverse roles in his illustrious career. Now add SARKAR to this impressive list. The veteran is in complete form this time around and even his harshest critics will have to admit that there's none in the industry who can match the versatility of Bachchan Sr. The veteran is not only getting the best roles now, even his performances have been scaling greater heights with each release. Abhishek Bachchan handles his part with flourish. He has to rely on expressions to convey the gamut of emotions and not once does he disappoint. If he handled the brash and uncouth character in YUVA with dexterity, he handles the sober, intense part in SARKAR with equal ease. Kay Kay is another actor who merits an award for his performance in SARKAR. The actor is truly outstanding in a role that fits him like a glove. Zakir is excellent. Ravi Kale is another actor to watch out for. He is first-rate. Raju Mavani plays the scheming politician with superb timing. Ishrat Ali, Jeeva, Deepak Shirke, Anant Jog and Virendra Saxena are appropriate. Katrina Kaif shows improvement over her maiden release [BOOM]. She makes her presence felt in a brief role. Tanisha also acts with conviction. Supriya Pathak and Rukhsaar are alright. On the whole, SARKAR will meet with diverse reactions. Those into realistic cinema will love the film, while those who swear by candyfloss entertainment may not give it their whole-hearted approval. At the box-office, its business will be the best in the Mumbai-Maharashtra belt mainly.

A 2-Disc Collector's Edition of KAANTE has been released by KRIA
with English Subtitles, Anamorphic Widescreen, Dolby Digital 5.1 Sound. Disc 2 contains: Deleted Scenes, TV Promos, Trailers, Songs, Remix Songs - Jaane Kya Hoga.
KAANTE stars Amitabh Bachchan, Sanjay Dutt, Suniel Shetty, Kumar Gaurav, Lucky Ali, Mahesh Majrekar, Malaika Arora-Khan and Ishaa Koppikar. The film is Directed By Sanjay Gupta.
Gupta takes giant strides. Milap Zaveri's dialogue is another ace. Cinematography [Kurt Brabbee] is first-rate and can be best described in one word - brilliant. Stunts [Spiro Rozatos, Simon Gunther, Bhiku Verma] are first-rate. The background score [Gregor Narholz] is exceptional. Anand Raaj Anand's music is yet another asset. The erotic 'Mahi Ve' is sure to be a major attraction. Amitabh Bachchan is proficient as ever. Sanjay Dutt shines. Sunil Shetty is superb. Kumar Gaurav and Lucky Ali make their presence felt. Manjrekar will be loved by the masses. On the whole, the much-anticipated and much-hyped KAANTE takes a step forward in terms of content and technique. An apt example of progressive cinema that breaks the shackles of stereotype, the film has everything to woo the cinegoer, thirsting for wholesome entertainment.

Bunty Aur Babli A 2-DISC Special Edition DVD of BUNTY AUR BABLI has been released by YASH RAJ FILMS
with Subtitles in English, Anamorphic Widescreen, Dolby Digital 5.1 Sound. Disc 2 contains: The Making of, Deleted Scenes, Out-Takes, “B n B” Music Video, The Making of “B n B” Music Video, Music Release function, Trailor and Television Promos. For More Information, Please Click Here
. BAB stars Abhishek Bachchan, Rani Mukherjee, Amitabh Bachchan, Kiran Joneja, Prem Chopra, Raj Babbar, Puneet Issar and Ranjeet. The film is Directed By Shaad Ali.
Shaad Ali's direction is efficient. Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy's music: 'Dhadak Dhadak' is a track that you wish to hum after the show has ended. The songs are well filmed. Cinematography [Abhik Mukhopadhyay] is of a high quality. The sound design [Anuj Mathur] is appropriate. Despite the fact that BUNTY AUR BABLI doesn't really demand histrionics from any of the actors, it must be said that the three principal characters, Amitabh Bachchan, Abhishek Bachchan and Rani Mukerji, deliver topnotch performances. Amitabh is convincing in a role that suits him to the T. Abhishek Bachchan is wonderful. The actor is getting better with every release. He handles the light moments with the same sincerity with which he handles the emotional ones. Rani Mukerji is superb. The actor sinks her teeth into this role and comes out with flying colors. The film has a number of characters, but the ones who register the maximum impact are Raj Babbar, Punit Issar, Kiran Joneja Sippy and Rameshwari. Prem Chopra and Pratima Kazmi are alright. On the whole, BUNTY AUR BABLI has taken an excellent start due to two reasons -- the Yash Raj brand and the fact that the two Bachchans have been teamed for the first time. The first weekend will witness 'House Full' boards outside.

Yukta Mookhey comes across confidently on screen, the actress is very camera friendly. Aftab Shivdasani gives it all to this role. Zulfi Syed looks photogenic and his boyish looks will win him admirers amongst youth. Govind Namdev and Anang Desai register an impact. Smita Jaykar, as always, is first-rate. Saadhika is fair. Cinematography (Harmeet Singh, Sanjay Malwankar) is appealing. Dialogues (Jalees Sherwani) are excellent. The songs are of a mixed variety, 'Chori Chori Tu' and 'Milti Hain, Jhukti Hain' stand out. What is Video Piracy?

Video Piracy is the unauthorized copying/duplicating of a film on Video Tape or DVD. Imagine how you would feel if you did something creative and someone stole your idea and made money from it by selling it as his own. This is exactly what video piracy it all about. When a film is pirated it is available at local video stores with in days after the films theatrical release (about 7 days later). It usually cost the same as original DVDs (between $25 to $35 - Canadian dollars). You the consumer go to the videostore and buy the dvd without knowing that it was pirated.

How does this affect you?

Well, when you buy a pirated DVD or video, all the money from the sale of the DVD or video goes to the company or individual who pirated the Film(s). The Film makers don't get any of that money. And if a film is a blockbuster, like "Lagaan" or "Asoka", film makers loose a lot of money. Some films are considered flops because the pirated videos and DVDs are available so quickly that no one goes to see the film at the theatre. Even though a film could be watched by millions on pirated DVD or video, it wouldn't be considered a hit, because the film makers don't have a record of anything that's sold since it wasn't released by them. This is why many of your favourite movies are flops at the box office.

When the filmmakers loose money, they don't have enough money to make good films for future productions. So they start making films by sacrificing on a well written scripts/stories, thay hire actors who are less talented, Directors who can't be creative because they don't have the budget and horrible music because they can't afford good equipment, there are many other issues involved in the making of a film. But unless these brilliant Directors and Producers are successful in making money from their films, they can't make the next blockbuster. Who know how may blockbusters we have already lost out on because the Director and Producers were unable to complete their vision the way they thought it. If video piracy is stopped, these directors and producers can concentrate on the creativity of a film with having to worry about the cost and where the money is coming from and perhaps we can have more blockbusters every year.

Original DVDs have to pass quality control guidelines which the pirated DVDs never do. The picture quality of pirated DVDs is not as sharp as original DVDs (which is bad for your eyes) and the sound is usually pretty bad. But you still pay the same price for a pirated films as an original one. Original DVDs are transfered from the original print of the films and give you the best available picture quality and the best sound.

What can you do?

First of all, insist on non-pirated DVDs and videos at your local video stores. No matter how tempting it is don't buy pirated versions of newly released films. Because when the original version is released it usually has bonus features on it, like The making of the films, interviews with the stars, deleted scenes, directors comments, posters, postcards etc., so its worth the wait.

If you know of any store(s) that sells pirated video please click here to report them.

How can you tell if it is pirated?

Here are several ways to tell...

SUBTITLES

The first way is to see if the subtitles of the movie can be turned off. On pirated DVDs, subtitles can not be turned. If the film is widescreen (there is a black bar on the top and bottom of your TV screen) and the subtitles appear on the picture part of the film, then it is pirated. The subtitles should appear on the black bar at the bottom. See example below:

LABELS

Another way to tell is to check the CD Label. If it only has the name of the film, it is pirated. Original DVDs have artwork of the film on the label. Videos should have a glossy case like American films. See Example below:

FRONT COVER

If that doesn't help you, don't worry there are still many other ways to tell. The front cover should have the name of the film the name of the company that released the film, the name of director or producer and the cover should be made of glossy paper. In Pirated DVDs and video rhe picture artworks on the actual discs are very poor quality and can easily be differentiated from the original.. See Example below:

I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for taking the time to read this. And I hope you will join the fight to help stop stop Video Piracy. Please pass the word. And remember, movie piracy is both damaging to the companies that make the film, and to the consumers who purchase them. Companies lose profits and have to expend money on legal fees. Consumers get an inferior product that does not have to pass any quality control guidelines.

Thanks

-Anant
